Research Log of Web Science Students

Computer Science is not simply programming

yooohooo.. soo yellow

with one comment

Last week, we have successfully captured image using the webcam.

Here is a screenshot of our Game Menu

and Webcam Capture

In our webcam capture, we chose the color yellow because it is not commonly seen (i.e as school uniform or wall paint). As of the moment, we print a caption saying “Yellow Siya” to show that we have identified the object.

In order to detect a certain color, we check each pixels in the BufferedImage returned by the webcam and through the getRGB method, the result was compared to a hardcoded value of yellow. Also each pixels that matched our hardcoded value was placed in a list, the detection will only be successful if the list is large enough. So if ever there are more than 1 instance of the same color on the BufferedImage, the webcam will only detect the larger object.

  1. Can’t you add a module that allows users to calibrate the colors that they will be using? For example, if I want to use Blue instead of Yellow, I can get the camera to take a photo of the object that I want to use to control your game and then use that as a control color.
