Another Admissions Appointment

leave a comment »

First of all, apologies for the corny title. I just wanted something AAA.

Anyway, last Friday, we had another meeting with Dr. Franco of the Office of Admissions. We demonstrated our project again, including the actual flow from building a template to the verification of data. His concerns about checking the integrity of the printed output were also addressed in our demo. Overall, he was pleased with how our project has progressed since we first showed it to him. He even gave ideas about our paper! Yay!

We set a final-final meeting with him to check if everything about our project is okay already since there were some things needed to be added in the printed version of the grades.

Not So Over Yet

leave a comment »

Yesterday was supposedly our final thesis presentation, but no, we still have a presentation at the Office of Admissions tomorrow. We were preparing for it today, adding some of the extra features Ma’am Leah told us to add. Oh, and I finally decided on the most elegant way on displaying the date of last XML update.

We are almost finish with one of the three assigned papers, but I do hope it’s okay already.

Paper Schmaper

leave a comment »

Finally, I’m done with the format of our Final Paper. Writing a paper in LaTeX isn’t the easiest task, good thing you can write each part separately and then combine them in one central file… Reminds me of classes.

Now, I wonder if our paper would go past 20 pages, haha!

Hello, Dr. Franco!

with one comment

After our meeting with Ma’am Leah, we went to the Office of Admissions for our consultation with Dr. Franco. It was actually past office hours but good thing Dr. Franco was okay with us doing the demo-slash-consultation.

The response was generally positive, though he did point out some things that could be improved in the next iteration of our project. For one, if ever the principal sees a mistake in the grades, the encoder has to edit and re-process the grades and the principal has to re-check all of it again since the data is stored in one XML file. It would be great according to Dr. Franco if there’s a way to edit only that one (or few) incorrect entries. Also, this software will be part of the initial steps in UPCAT application, so there’s no UPCAT # yet, so student ID would be better.

GPSy Poster Draft

YAY. Redesigned the poster I made last weekend. The first one I made was somewhat messy and unreadable. 🙂

SimpleXML

SimpleXML is an extension included in PHP 5.0 that provides an easy way of reading an XML file–if you know its layout (w3schools.com and IBM developerWorks provide excellent tutorials).

For our project, we’re using it in order to manipulate the XML file generated by our parser, such that the user can view it in in the web app.

In other words, it helps us “convert” from this:

…to this:

Into XML

Whoever said “Maraming namamatay sa maling akala…” is a really wise person.

I thought that XML is just about tags and data, but NO… there’s more to XML than those two things. I’ve started reading a book about XML so I can use whatever I’d pick up from there for our XML Schema.

P.S. Thanks Ma’am Weng for the book! 🙂
