Computer Science is not simply programming

post presentation

I intensely dislike speaking in public so the presentation earlier was terrifying since I had to do it alone. At least it’s over and next week onwards will be demos. I much prefer that, I’ve always been better at coding than at writing and research. Case in point: the write ups on the rrl are still languishing in a word document on my laptop. I have no problem with reading all the stuff we’ve had to slog through but condensing and summarizing them is so not my forte. At least once it’s over my focus will solely be on working with Java FX.

papers and even more links

Our reading up on papers has focused on a couple of related topics namely Computer Education for (Elementary Level) Children, Visual Programming, and Web-based Applications. There are numerous papers available and it has been difficult to whittle down the amount to read. We also encountered even more programs whose goal is teaching children about programming although none of them matched the exact set of features we aim to provide.

Here are some of the other programs that we’ve looked at: Alice, Scratch, and Greenfoot. There’s also Multikara which I remember using for CS 140.
