Services

Currently I’m searching on how to create web services in Java–and make sure that it will run on the App Engine.

As I always say–if Projectrix was in C#.NET, we’re almost done with the project by now. But no. *sighs*

PHP on Google App Engine?

leave a comment »

Bud and I did a little research:

  • While the Google App Engine does not natively support PHP, Quercus–a Java implentation of PHP serves as a workaround for this problem
  • (Sir Rom is quite hesitant about this as development of Quercus has been stagnant for 3 years I think.)

  • People who have used Quercus even added that it surpasses native PHP in terms of speed and functionality. Faster since it will be compiled in Java (vis-a-vis emulation) and as to functionality, you can make use of Java’s extensive libraries that are not present in PHP natively
  • (With the above comment, this will be irrelevant, haha!)

    Why PostgreSQL?

Here are few points that bud and I considered:

    • used by major web players such as Yahoo! and Skype
    • supports most operating systems
    • BSD License
    • contains ACID properties
    • enforces referential integrity
    • has transaction management
    • offers maximum/one of the largest sizes in terms of number of database, tables, rows, etc.
    • supports all database capabilities (i.e. union, intersect, etc.)
    • supported by Google App Engine

But I think we’ll be using BigTable (that I need to research on) since we’re targeting to have it deployed on the App Engine. (Ooops! Premature planning! XD)

    Reptile or Coffee?

Okay the title’s a bit lame.

Earlier, we were tasked to look for a better cloud than Mor.ph that can support PHP–or we should choose between Python or Java (for App Engine) by Wednesday.

Hmm, I’m not really a fan of Java. As I’ve said to Dan–the challenge (if there’s any, I have no idea yet) of learning Python might just waste precious time of focusing on the challenge on enhancing the app per se. But I’m willing to give it a try before I resort to Java.

But I’m just one vote–the other must come from my buddy. I’ll try to play around Python and if I get to enjoy working with it for the next 6 hours, it’s a go for me.
